WHY?
Because a shoot only succeeds when timing, communication, and safety are on point. The 1st AD plans the schedule, ensures clear communication, and connects the moving parts—so the director and camera team can focus on creative decisions.
WHAT?
Create shooting schedules and daily call sheets, coordinate teams, monitor safety and breaks, oversee workflows, lead meetings, and manage changes to the plan—all with clarity and calm.
WHEN?
From early planning meetings—often weeks or months before the shoot—through to the final take. The 1st AD is present throughout pre-production and the shoot.
HOW?
With leadership skills, big-picture thinking, legal knowledge, organizational experience—and a walkie-talkie that never stops crackling. The 1st AD doesn’t just run the set—they guide the whole team.
