About Job Shadowing
WHAT EXACTLY IS A JOB SHADOWING?
Job Shadowing means orientation. Over three days, you’ll accompany a film professional at work – watching, asking questions, and getting first-hand insight into their daily routine.
Whether on set, in a production office, at a rental house or film distributor – shadows see what really happens when films are made.
Unlike an internship, Job Shadowing focuses on watching rather than doing, thus removing the pressure to start working straight away. Watch, absorb, ask questions, and understand how everything fits together. Some people are discussing the last take, others are fine-tuning the lighting. Everywhere you look there’s something going on.
Das Ziel? Herauszufinden, ob ein Filmberuf (und die Filmbranche) zum eigenen Leben passt. Ein Job-Shadowing ist ein idealer Startpunkt: Erste Kontakte knüpfen, Fragen klären und die Vielseitigkeit der Filmwelt direkt erleben. Dabei wird spürbar, wie viele unterschiedliche Menschen gemeinsam daran arbeiten, einen Film zu produzieren.

The film scene is changing – but that won’t happen on its own. It takes companies and film professionals like you who are ready to open doors and offer genuine insights.
By offering someone a Job Shadowing, you create new opportunities. It’s not a lot of effort, but it sends a powerful signal: for fairness and inclusion, for an industry that wants to evolve, and for change we can only achieve together.
Ideally, one or several members of your departments would be open to being shadowed for three days. Don’t worry, this isn’t about onboarding or extra work, it’s about sharing a realistic glimpse into your daily routine.
The job shadowing is unpaid. Therefore, the only costs you’ll have to cover are for the catering on set and tickets for public transport if needed.
HOW A JOB SHADOWING WORKS:
- Register: Sign up via the Register button on our website.
- Create job shadowing offers: Add job shadowing opportunities for your upcoming production.
- Provide production details: Tell us the shooting period, possible shadowing days (if already known), filming location(s), and the positions that can be shadowed.
- Matching by NewMotion: We match your offer with suitable candidates from our pool of applicants and will get back to you with a concrete match proposal.
- Confirmation & organization: Once you confirm, we send you the contract documents and clarify any open questions.
- Connecting you with the shadow: Afterwards, we connect you with the selected shadow.
